Hi, thanks for visiting my website and taking a look at my work.
I’m an artist and writer in Seattle, where I have lived for more than 30 years. I was born in the Kansas City, and grew up in Pittsburgh and Hartford. Before I moved to Seattle, I lived in China for three years.
In my work, I’m excited by the possibility of using mosaic’s ancient materials and methods to find contemporary resonance and meaning. I’m always interested in the rhythm and music of line, and the interplay of color and gradient in the transition from light to dark. How can I make hard materials appear to flow like water? How many shades of black does it take to create the darkness of night? How can I surround something as mysterious as a chunk of rusted iron salvaged from a beach with glass and pottery so that it appears to be both fixed and floating?
Every mosaic is a chance to explore questions about technique, about art—and, with luck, about life. Usually, a specific question or two serves as the starting point. New questions always emerge as the work moves forward. Often, there is no clear answer. These are the questions I treasure the most.
If you have questions, thoughts about my work, or would just like to say hello, I’d love to hear from you. Please feel free to email me at todd@pretext.com
